Montgomery County is the epicenter of Maryland’s biotechnology industry and has emerged as an internationally recognized life sciences hub.  Capitalizing on a prime location in the heart of the region’s federal and advanced technology sectors, the county is home to over 300 biotech companies, 10,000 highly educated biotech workers and key federal research and regulatory institutions, such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the Walter Reed Army Institute.

Biohealth Partnership Advances Technology Transfer
Montgomery County has launched BioHealth Innovation, Inc. an industry-led partnership to help commercialize scientific discoveries and attract venture capital to entrepreneurial ventures.
Top academic research institutions Johns Hopkins University (JHU) and the Universities at Shady Grove (University of Maryland System comprising nine academic institutions) have satellite campuses located in Montgomery County. In addition, the county is home to Montgomery College, a nationally renowned community college. Montgomery College is the only community college in the nation with an integrated academic, business and research campus, the Pinkney Innovation Complex for Science & Technology, known as PIC MC. It is also the only community college with a hospital (Holy Cross Germantown Hospital) as its anchor resident partner. The Bioscience Education Center, a stunning, state of the art facility provides cutting edge curriculum in biotechnology for the County’s workforce. It allows Montgomery College to expand its mission of providing educational excellence in the sciences to meet the county’s need for a highly skilled and knowledgeable STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) workforce while feeding the County’s pipeline in talent from two year degrees through post graduate level.

To take advantage of our unparalleled blend of assets, the county has developed innovative industry-driven partnerships to support the unique needs of bioscience companies including access to specialized facilities, funding, key players in the industry and higher education resources.

The presence of global companies such as GlaxoSmithKline, AstraZeneca, Emergent BioSolutions, United Therapeutics and Qiagen make the region attractive for additional investment. The county, through its Economic Development Corporation (EDC), provides a full range of assistance to biotech companies including financial and tax incentives. Specific incentives to foster growth in the life sciences industry include an Investor Tax Credit program and the Life Sciences Impact Grant.
